MMS 173 ASSIGNMENT 2: KNOWING WHERE YOU'RE AT (PART 2)

HELLO THERE!

This assignment serves as my compass in the journey of photography, guiding me through self-discovery, technical assessment, and artistic evolution. It encompasses a comprehensive evaluation of the class, reflecting on the collective progress, strengths, and areas for refinement. Additionally, I will critically analyze five photographs from my peers, assessing their current level of expertise while drawing inspiration from their unique perspectives. Finally, I will position myself within the broader spectrum of the class, identifying where I stand and outlining actionable steps to refine my craft, push creative boundaries, and elevate my skills to the next level.

Part 1: Framing Our Collective Growth

In conducting a general assessment of the class, I scanned 20 assignments and noticed that many students are off to a strong start. Several have outstanding and creative portfolios, showcasing pictures that effectively apply design elements, principles, and composition. Some truly stood out with their unique artistic perspectives, demonstrating a deep understanding of visual storytelling and an ability to evoke emotion through their work.

I came across several impressive images that deeply moved me. The way these photographers were able to tell a story through their lens allowed me to connect with their pictures on an emotional level. It was fascinating to see life through their perspective, capturing moments that felt intimate, powerful, or thought-provoking. Their creative vision shone through, offering a glimpse into their artistic intent and personal narratives.

However, there are also those whose creative vision could benefit from further development. Taking more risks, experimenting with different angles and perspectives, improving symmetry, and exploring diverse subjects could help enhance their work. A deeper narrative within their compositions could also elevate the impact of their images. Additionally, post-production is an area that many, myself included, could improve upon. I have noticed that some students, including myself, submitted raw photos that could have been further refined through editing to enhance their final presentation. Learning how to enhance contrast, adjust exposure, and fine-tune colors can make a significant difference in the quality of the final image.

So far, based on the portfolios and assignments I have seen, there are many individuals who have shown impressive talent. While they may not yet be on par with the faculty-in-charge or big-name professionals, it is only a matter of time before they reach that level. With dedication, continuous learning, and a willingness to push creative boundaries, these students have the potential to not only match but even surpass industry professionals in the future. Passion, persistence, and the ability to think outside the box will be key factors in their growth.

Overall, the diversity within the class has resulted in a wide range of skill levels, each contributing to a rich and dynamic learning environment. Some students display technical proficiency, while others excel in artistic expression. This variety presents a great opportunity for mutual learning, as those strong in composition can inspire those needing improvement, and vice versa.
With this course, I hope that the entire class, myself included, will be able to refine our technical skills, enhance our artistic perspectives, and develop our ability to tell unique stories. I also hope we can challenge conventional photographic norms, explore new subjects, and bring fresh ideas to the table. Growth in photography requires continuous experimentation and a willingness to step outside of our comfort zones, and I am excited to see how we all evolve throughout this journey.

Practice

Now that I have had the opportunity to see my classmates' work, I have gained a clearer understanding of where I stand as a photographer and what areas I need to focus on for improvement. Relative to the rest of the class, I would say that while I have a solid foundation, there are several aspects of my photography that require refinement and growth. Many of my peers have demonstrated a strong grasp of composition, lighting, and storytelling, and seeing their work has inspired me to push myself further.

One of the key areas where I see room for improvement is in my ability to explore diverse subjects and perspectives. I often find myself gravitating toward familiar themes and compositions, which can limit my creative growth. To challenge myself, I need to step out of my comfort zone and experiment with different genres of photography, whether that be portraiture, street photography, abstract compositions, or documentary storytelling. By diversifying my subject matter, I can develop a more versatile and dynamic portfolio.

Another area that I need to enhance is my creative and artistic vision. Some of my classmates have a remarkable ability to think outside the box, creating compelling and thought-provoking images. I aspire to cultivate a more innovative approach by studying the work of master photographers, exploring new techniques, and actively seeking inspiration from various forms of art. Additionally, improving my ability to conceptualize a photograph before capturing it will help me execute more meaningful and impactful images.

Post-production is another crucial element that I need to refine. While I have a basic understanding of editing software, I recognize that my ability to enhance images in post-processing could be significantly improved. Learning advanced editing techniques such as color grading, retouching, and fine-tuning contrast and exposure will allow me to elevate the quality of my work. I plan to dedicate more time to mastering these skills by following tutorials, experimenting with different editing styles, and analyzing the post-production techniques used by professionals.

Beyond technical skills, I want to focus on strengthening the storytelling aspect of my photography. Many of the most compelling images are those that evoke emotion, convey a message, or tell a story. To achieve this, I need to be more intentional with my compositions, paying close attention to elements such as subject placement, visual flow, and the relationship between objects within the frame. By incorporating narrative-driven elements, I can create images that resonate more deeply with viewers.

Lastly, continuous practice is essential for my growth. Applying the principles of photography on a regular basis will allow me to develop a more intuitive understanding of what makes a photograph successful. I aim to set personal challenges, such as completing themed photography projects, capturing a photo every day, or critiquing my own work to identify areas for improvement. Seeking feedback from peers and mentors will also be invaluable in my journey toward becoming a more skilled and confident photographer.

Overall, while I acknowledge that I have a long way to go, I am excited about the potential for growth and improvement. By actively pushing myself to explore, innovate, and refine my craft, I am confident that I can develop a stronger photographic voice and produce work that truly reflects my artistic vision.
